Description

Purple Stained Glass is the dyed, translucent variant of Minecraft's regular glass block, tinted deep purple for windows and colored accents. The recipe places one Purple Dye in the center of the 3×3 crafting grid, surrounds the dye with eight Glass blocks, and yields eight Purple Stained Glass blocks at once — a recipe available since Java Edition 1.7.2, while Bedrock Edition has carried stained glass since version 1.0.0. A placed Purple Stained Glass block drops itself only under a Silk Touch enchantment (an enchantment that makes delicate blocks drop in item form); every other way of breaking leaves no drop at all. No tool is faster than another, because Purple Stained Glass has no assigned tool: a diamond pickaxe and a bare fist are equally fast.

Builders put Purple Stained Glass to work as cathedral windows, skylights, and dramatic purple domes, and six blocks convert into sixteen Purple Stained Glass Panes for thin window frames. Purple Stained Glass also recolors beacon beams: stained glass placed anywhere above a beacon changes the beam color, and the first glass block directly above the beacon sets a solid purple beam on its own. Wandering traders sell three Purple Dye for one emerald, which keeps large glass projects supplied.

How to Craft Purple Stained Glass in Minecraft

    Smelt sand into Glass

    Collect Sand or Red Sand and smelt the material in a furnace — every unit of sand melts into one Glass block. One crafting batch of Purple Stained Glass needs eight Glass blocks.

    Make Purple Dye

    Combine one Blue Dye with one Red Dye anywhere on the crafting grid to produce two Purple Dye.

    Craft the stained glass

    Place one Purple Dye in the center cell of the 3×3 crafting grid, fill the other eight cells with Glass, and collect eight Purple Stained Glass blocks from the output slot.

    Reclaim placed glass with Silk Touch

    Break placed Purple Stained Glass with a Silk Touch tool to pick the glass up intact. Without the enchantment, breaking leaves no drop at all.

Quiet roofs

Mobs cannot normally spawn on stained glass (zombie reinforcements are the only exception), so a Purple Stained Glass roof or floor adds no new spawn spots to a base.
