Description

A Powder Snow Cauldron forms when a player empties a Powder Snow Bucket into an empty Cauldron, or when a Cauldron sits in a snowy biome during snowfall and slowly accumulates powder snow. Powder Snow Cauldron stores up to 3 layers in Java Edition or 6 layers in Bedrock Edition, and a Powder Snow Bucket emptied into an empty Cauldron fills every layer at once; a partially filled cauldron cannot be topped up with a bucket. Powder Snow Cauldron carries hardness 2 and blast resistance 2, and a wooden pickaxe or better is required to recover the block as an item; mining without a pickaxe drops nothing.

Unlike a Powder Snow block, a Powder Snow Cauldron deals no freeze damage to entities that stand inside, so decorative snow storage stays safe for wandering villagers and players. A Powder Snow Cauldron still extinguishes burning mobs and players on contact, though every extinguished entity drains one layer and a full cauldron becomes a Water Cauldron one water level lower, while fall damage passes through unaffected. Powder Snow Cauldron is renewable (you can farm it endlessly via snowfall in snowy biomes) and was introduced in Minecraft Java Edition 1.17 and Bedrock Edition 1.17.0.

Guide

How to make a Powder Snow Cauldron in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Place an empty Cauldron

Set down a regular Cauldron in any biome where you want decorative snow storage, since the Cauldron is the base block a Powder Snow Cauldron is built from.

  2. 2

    Empty a Powder Snow Bucket

Right-click an empty Cauldron with a Powder Snow Bucket to fill every layer in one pour — 3 layers in Java Edition or 6 layers in Bedrock Edition — turning the Cauldron into a Powder Snow Cauldron.

  3. 3

Read the fill level with a comparator

Point a redstone comparator at the Powder Snow Cauldron: the output signal rises with the fill level (up to 3 in Java Edition), which makes automated level monitoring possible.

  4. 4

    Or let snowfall fill it

Leave the Cauldron in a snowy biome during active snowfall and powder snow accumulates layer by layer for free, with no bucket needed.

  5. 5

    Mine with a pickaxe

Break the Powder Snow Cauldron with a wooden pickaxe or better to recover the Powder Snow Cauldron item, since mining by hand drops nothing.

Tip

Java Edition shows 3 fill levels and Bedrock Edition shows 6 fill levels for the same Powder Snow Cauldron, so a full cauldron looks different across editions. Only a completely full cauldron can be scooped back into one Powder Snow Bucket.
