Description

Potent Sulfur is a reactive yellow block introduced in Minecraft 26.2 "Chaos Cubed" that generates naturally inside water pools of the new Sulfur Caves biome. Its defining mechanic is the geyser trigger: when lava is placed beneath, Potent Sulfur erupts as a continuous geyser shooting potent sulfur particles upward; when a block from the `#causes_periodic_geyser_eruptions` tag is beneath instead, the eruption fires on a periodic cycle. The continuous case uses the `#causes_continuous_geyser_eruptions` tag. Players can also craft Potent Sulfur from nine Sulfur in a shapeless 3×3 grid. The block ties into the Sulfur Cube mob's explosive archetype and works as a trap, vertical mob launcher, or ambient cave decoration.

Geyser Setup Guide

How to create a Potent Sulfur geyser in Minecraft 26.2

  1. 1

    Obtain Potent Sulfur

Explore Sulfur Caves to find Potent Sulfur in natural water pools and sulfur springs, or craft it at a crafting table by placing nine Sulfur blocks in any 3×3 arrangement (shapeless recipe).

  2. 2

Dig a water column 1–4 blocks deep

Dig a column in the ground and fill it with water source blocks. Each additional water layer adds 5 blocks to the total geyser launch height, so a 4-block-deep column launches entities up to 20 blocks.

  3. 3

Place Potent Sulfur at the base of the water

Set one Potent Sulfur block at the bottom of your water column. The block will become wet and begin emitting bubbles. Entities within 3 blocks also receive 4 seconds of Nausea from the noxious gas the block produces.

  4. 4

Add Magma Block for periodic eruptions

Place a Magma Block directly under the Potent Sulfur. The geyser will now erupt on a randomized periodic cycle, shooting potent sulfur particles upward and launching entities caught in the column.

  5. 5

Swap to Lava for a continuous geyser

Replace the Magma Block with a Lava source. The geyser switches to continuous eruption mode, launching entities non-stop at the full geyser height. Use this for traps, mob launchers, or spectacle builds.

Warning

Potent Sulfur submerged in water emits noxious gas that gives 4 seconds of Nausea to any entity within a 3-block radius — including the player. Keep this in mind when building near the block.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Potent Sulfur geyser work?

With lava placed directly below, Potent Sulfur erupts in continuous mode and launches entities upward. With a Magma Block below, it erupts periodically on a random cycle instead.

How high does the geyser launch entities?

Geyser height equals 5 blocks multiplied by the number of water source layers above the Potent Sulfur. A 4-block-deep water column launches entities 20 blocks upward.

Does Potent Sulfur generate naturally?

Yes — it spawns naturally in water pools and sulfur springs inside the Sulfur Caves biome.

Can you craft Potent Sulfur?

Yes. Place nine Sulfur blocks anywhere in a 3×3 crafting grid (shapeless recipe) to craft one Potent Sulfur block.

Does Potent Sulfur emit noxious gas?

Yes. When placed under water up to 4 blocks deep, it produces decorative bubbles and gives 4 seconds of Nausea to any entity within a 3-block radius.
