Description

Polished Granite Slab is a decorative half-height variant of polished granite that never generates naturally, so every slab in a Minecraft world comes from a crafting table or a stonecutter. A crafting table turns 3 polished granite blocks into 6 Polished Granite Slabs, and a stonecutter cuts a single granite or polished granite block into 2 slabs. Polished Granite Slab was added in Java Edition 1.14 and Bedrock Edition 1.9.0, with polished granite stairs appearing in the same releases.

Builders choose Polished Granite Slab for floors, stair landings, and trim where full polished granite blocks would feel too heavy. A single Polished Granite Slab fills the bottom or top half of a block space, and two slabs placed in one space combine into a full-size double slab. Polished Granite Slab can be waterlogged, which keeps flooded paths and pool edges passable, and the slab is neither flammable nor destroyed by lava. The polished granite blocks the slabs are cut from match stone in blast resistance, so full-block polished granite builds hold up like stone construction.

Guide

How to Craft Polished Granite Slab in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect granite or polished granite

Mine granite with any pickaxe: granite sits in large pockets underground, forms part of large copper ore veins, and appears in desert village armorer houses. Polished granite additionally generates in many ocean ruin variants.

  2. 2

Craft polished granite at a crafting table

Place 4 granite blocks in a 2×2 square on the crafting table to craft 4 polished granite blocks. A stonecutter converts 1 granite block into 1 polished granite block.

  3. 3

Turn 3 polished granite into 6 slabs

Fill one full horizontal row of the 3×3 crafting grid with polished granite; the recipe outputs 6 Polished Granite Slabs.

  4. 4

Cut slabs at the stonecutter instead

A stonecutter turns 1 granite block or 1 polished granite block directly into 2 Polished Granite Slabs, skipping the polishing step when cutting raw granite.

  5. 5

Reclaim placed slabs with a pickaxe

Break a placed Polished Granite Slab with any pickaxe to pick the slab back up; mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Place two slabs into one block space to build a full double slab.

Light and sounds

A single Polished Granite Slab partially blocks light in Java Edition and diffuses skylight in Bedrock Edition; in Bedrock Edition, combining two slabs into a double slab also plays the block's use sound.

Frequently asked questions

How many polished granite slabs stack in one slot?

Polished Granite Slab stacks up to 64 per inventory slot, the same limit as polished granite blocks.

Is Polished Granite Slab renewable?

Yes. Mason villagers trade polished granite, and every 3 traded blocks craft into 6 slabs.

Is the crafting table or the stonecutter more efficient?

Both routes yield 2 slabs per granite block: the crafting table turns 3 polished granite into 6 slabs, and the stonecutter cuts 1 block into 2 slabs. The stonecutter also skips the polishing step when starting from raw granite.

Did Polished Granite Slab stats change over time?

Bedrock Edition 1.21.20 lowered polished granite slab hardness from 2 to 1.5, with the same change applied to double slabs.

What is the difference between Granite Slab and Polished Granite Slab?

Granite Slab and Polished Granite Slab are separate blocks cut from different materials: granite versus polished granite, the refined form crafted from 4 granite blocks in a 2×2 square.
