How to Make Polished Diorite Slab in Minecraft
Polished Diorite Slab
Polished Diorite Slab is a half-height building block (slab) crafted from polished diorite for sleek floors, window sills, and layered wall designs.
Description
Polished Diorite Slab is renewable (villagers sell polished diorite, so the supply never runs out), stacks to 64, and can be waterlogged in the empty half of its block space. A single slab occupies the top or the bottom half of a block, and a matching slab placed in the opposite half merges into a double slab that drops two slabs when broken. Mobs cannot spawn on bottom slabs, and a bottom slab absorbs an explosion set off directly on top of it, weakening TNT and creeper blasts. Builders pick Polished Diorite Slab for smooth floors, window sills, and gradual stair-like transitions where a full polished diorite block would look too bulky.

How to Craft and Use Polished Diorite Slabs in Minecraft
-
1
Craft polished diorite
Place four diorite blocks in a 2×2 square on a crafting table to get four polished diorite blocks, or mine polished diorite directly in warm ocean ruins.
-
2
Craft six slabs at once
Place three polished diorite blocks in one horizontal row on a crafting table and take six Polished Diorite Slabs from the output slot.
-
3
Stonecut instead
Put one polished diorite block — or one plain diorite block — into a stonecutter to receive two Polished Diorite Slabs without filling a crafting grid.
-
4
Place bottom and top halves
Click the top face of a block to lay a Polished Diorite Slab across the bottom half of a block space, or click the underside of a block above to seat the slab in the top half. A matching slab placed into the free half merges both into one double slab.
-
5
Reclaim the slab with a pickaxe
Break a Polished Diorite Slab with any pickaxe — a wooden pickaxe is enough — to collect the slab back; breaking the slab without a pickaxe drops nothing.
Mobs cannot spawn on bottom slabs but can spawn on top slabs and double slabs, so keep Polished Diorite Slab floors on the lower half to stop hostile mobs from appearing inside a base. Bottom slabs also absorb an explosion set off directly on top of them, weakening TNT and creeper blasts.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Polished Diorite Slab be placed upright as a vertical panel?
No. Slabs cannot be oriented vertically in Minecraft, so a Polished Diorite Slab always fills either the bottom or the top half of a block space.
What happens when water meets a Polished Diorite Slab?
A single slab placed into a water source becomes waterlogged and keeps water in the empty half of the block. A slab placed into flowing water leaves an air pocket in the unfilled half that a player can breathe inside.
Does light pass through a Polished Diorite Slab?
On Bedrock Edition a single slab lets light through and diffuses sky light, while a double slab is fully opaque. On Java Edition a single slab blocks light.
Do dropped items fall through a Polished Diorite Slab into a hopper?
Yes. A bottom slab placed on top of a hopper is transparent to items, so dropped items pass through the slab and land in the hopper underneath.
Do sand and gravel break when they land on a Polished Diorite Slab?
Yes. Falling blocks such as sand, gravel, and concrete powder turn into their dropped item form when they land on a bottom slab, exactly as when they land on a torch.
