Pointed Dripstone
Pointed Dripstone is the dual-form stalactite/stalagmite — damages mobs falling on tips and fills cauldrons with water or lava.
Description
Functionally, the block has two damage roles. Stalactites that fall on a mob — triggered by breaking the dripstone block above an unsupported stalactite — deal heavy damage scaled by fall distance, and stalagmites at the bottom of any drop deal damage to entities landing on the tip. A water source placed above a dripstone-block-and-stalactite chain slowly fills a cauldron below with water; lava above does the same with lava, providing the only renewable lava source in vanilla. Stalactites growing from a dripstone block above water do so without active player intervention.

How to use Pointed Dripstone in Minecraft
-
1
Mine it in a dripstone cave
Break Pointed Dripstone inside a dripstone cave; it always drops itself with any tool, and a pickaxe breaks it fastest.
-
2
Place a stalactite or stalagmite
Attach Pointed Dripstone to the underside of a block to hang a stalactite, or to the top of a block to stand a stalagmite that points up.
-
3
Build a falling-stalactite trap
Hang a stalactite under a dripstone block, then break the support; the falling stalactite deals fall damage scaled by height to any mob beneath it.
-
4
Farm water or lava into a cauldron
Put a water or lava source on a dripstone block above a stalactite and a cauldron underneath; the tip drips and fills the cauldron, the only renewable lava in vanilla.
A stalactite under a dripstone block with a water source above grows one block at a time on random ticks, with no further player action once set up.

Frequently asked questions
Can you craft Pointed Dripstone?
No. Pointed Dripstone is not craftable; you obtain it by mining stalactites and stalagmites in dripstone caves. Four pointed dripstone craft one dripstone block, not the reverse.
How much damage does a falling stalactite deal?
A falling stalactite deals fall damage that scales with the distance it drops, easily reaching lethal amounts from tall caves — one of the strongest single-hit traps in vanilla.
Does Pointed Dripstone make lava renewable?
Yes. A lava source on a dripstone block above a stalactite drips into a cauldron below, filling it with lava over time — the only renewable lava source in vanilla Minecraft.
What tool breaks Pointed Dripstone fastest?
Any pickaxe breaks Pointed Dripstone fastest, but it drops itself with any tool or even by hand.
When was Pointed Dripstone added?
Pointed Dripstone was added in the Caves & Cliffs Part I update, in both Java and Bedrock Edition 1.17.
