Description

Oak Leaves generate as the canopy of oak trees — the most common tree species in the Overworld, found in plains, forests, swamps, meadows, and a dozen other biomes. The texture is a soft saturated green tinted by biome (darker in jungles, paler in plains), and the block is technically transparent for light, allowing sun to reach the ground beneath the tree. Mining without shears or silk touch destroys the leaf with random chance to drop secondary items.

The most distinctive drop is apples: about one in two hundred leaves drops a fresh apple when broken, the only natural source of this food in vanilla without trading or chest loot. Saplings drop at roughly one in twenty rate, allowing replanting after harvest, and sticks at one in fifty. Shears guarantee the leaf block itself drops intact for builder reuse — tree-shaped builds, garden hedges, and dense canopy decoration. Leaves placed by hand are flagged persistent and never decay; leaves left after the supporting log is removed within six block radius decay automatically over a few minutes.

Survival Guide

How to collect and use Oak Leaves in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find oak trees

Oak Leaves grow on oak trees in common Overworld biomes such as plains, forests, swamps, and meadows.

  2. 2

    Choose the right tool

Use shears or a Silk Touch tool when Oak Leaves must drop as a block for hedges, tree crowns, roofs, or garden decoration.

  3. 3

    Break leaves for drops

Break Oak Leaves without shears when the goal is oak saplings, sticks, or rare apples instead of decorative leaf blocks.

  4. 4

    Place leaves intentionally

Player-placed Oak Leaves are persistent, so Oak Leaves used in builds do not decay after nearby oak logs are removed.

Drop rates

Oak Leaves can drop oak saplings at about 5%, sticks at about 2%, and apples at about 0.5%; Fortune improves those chances.

Frequently asked questions

Do Oak Leaves drop apples in Minecraft?

Oak Leaves can drop apples at about a 0.5% rate when Oak Leaves decay or are broken without shears. Dark oak leaves share the same apple drop behavior.

How do players collect Oak Leaves as blocks?

Players collect Oak Leaves as blocks by breaking Oak Leaves with shears or with a Silk Touch tool. Breaking Oak Leaves normally rolls sapling, stick, and apple drops instead.

Do placed Oak Leaves decay after logs are removed?

Player-placed Oak Leaves do not decay after nearby logs are removed. Naturally generated Oak Leaves decay when Oak Leaves are too far from a log connection.
