Oak Boat is a craftable water vehicle that carries two passengers at 8 blocks per second — the fastest early-game way to cross any body of water.
Guide
Place five oak planks in a U-shape in a crafting table (or your 2×2 inventory grid): two planks in the left column, one plank in the bottom center, and two planks in the right column. The center top slot stays empty. No other materials are needed.
Right-click any water surface to place the Oak Boat. The boat can be placed on rivers, oceans, lakes, and swamps. Avoid placing it in flowing lava — Oak Boat is destroyed instantly in lava.
Right-click the boat to enter. Use your movement keys (W/A/S/D) to steer. The boat reaches about 8 blocks per second on flat water. A second player or mob can ride in the boat as a passenger by right-clicking while you are aboard.
Press Shift to dismount. To pick up the boat, hit it once — it breaks and drops as an Oak Boat item. Be careful near solid blocks at high speed, as collision destroys the boat (though it still drops the item).
Place the Oak Boat on packed ice or blue ice for dramatically higher speed. This technique is used to build ice highways in vanilla Minecraft, achieving the fastest overworld travel without elytras or commands.
Oak Boat does not drift downstream automatically. In rivers or rapids, you must actively steer. Going up a waterfall is impossible without leaving the boat — exit and place the boat above the falls.
Place five oak planks in a U-shape in a crafting table — two on the left, one at the bottom center, and two on the right. The top center slot stays empty. No tools or other materials are needed.
An Oak Boat moves at approximately 8 blocks per second on flat water, compared to about 2.2 blocks per second when swimming. This makes it nearly four times faster and the go-to early-game transport across water.
Yes. In Java Edition, one player drives and one passenger can ride along. The passenger right-clicks the boat while the driver is already seated. Mobs and villagers can also occupy the passenger seat.
Hitting a solid block at speed destroys the Oak Boat, but it drops as an item and can be retrieved. Always approach shores slowly to avoid losing your boat far from where you need it.
No. Oak Boat is destroyed immediately when it touches lava. For nether travel, there is currently no boat equivalent that survives lava.
Place the Oak Boat on packed ice or blue ice instead of regular water. Blue ice in particular produces some of the highest travel speeds achievable in survival Minecraft without commands or elytras.
