Magma Block
Magma Block burns players standing on it without fire-resistance gear and creates downward bubble columns underwater.
Description
Walking on the surface deals one heart of damage per second to any entity without fire resistance or frost-walker boots — including the player. Combined with iron-door alcoves, this becomes a passive killing surface for mob farms: pipe enemies onto the block and let the burns finish them. Underwater, the block does not deal damage but generates a downward bubble column above it, dragging entities (and items) beneath the surface, ideal for elevators that lower the player rather than lift them. Mining requires a wood-tier or higher pickaxe; without silk touch, the block drops itself, allowing easy harvesting.

How to use a Magma Block in Minecraft
-
1
Craft or gather the block
Place four magma cream in a 2x2 crafting grid to make one magma block, or mine it from the Nether with any pickaxe (it drops itself).
-
2
Build a passive mob trap
Set magma blocks on the floor of a mob farm; mobs walking on them take half a heart of fire damage repeatedly until they die.
-
3
Make a downward water elevator
Place a magma block at the bottom of a water column to create a downward bubble column that pulls players and items beneath the surface.
-
4
Walk across safely
Sneak while crossing, or wear Frost Walker boots, or drink a Fire Resistance potion to take no damage from the surface.
Magma blocks deal no damage to mobs that spawn in the Nether (like zombified piglins) and never harm players who are sneaking on top of them.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a magma block?
Place four magma cream in a 2x2 crafting grid to make one magma block. Magma cream itself is crafted from a slimeball and blaze powder.
Does a magma block hurt you?
Yes. Standing on it deals about one heart of fire damage per second, but you take no damage while sneaking, wearing Frost Walker boots, or under Fire Resistance.
What does a magma block do underwater?
Underwater it generates a downward bubble column that pulls entities and items below the surface, which is used to build descending water elevators.
What tool mines a magma block?
Any pickaxe from wood tier upward mines it, and the block drops itself even without Silk Touch.
Is the magma block in both Java and Bedrock?
Yes. It was added in Java Edition 1.10 and is available in Bedrock Edition, with the same damage and bubble-column behavior.
