A player who uses Light Gray Bed at night or during a thunderstorm sleeps for 101 in-game ticks (5.05 seconds) and wakes at sunrise, and a daytime click still saves the bed as the spawn point with the message 'Respawn point set'. Light Gray Bed refuses sleep while a monster stands within 8 blocks of the head horizontally and 5 blocks vertically, and the player must stand within 3 blocks in Java Edition (2 blocks in Bedrock Edition). Falling onto Light Gray Bed bounces a living entity back up at 75% of the impact velocity and counts only half the fall distance, which cuts fall damage to slightly under half.

Light Gray Bed explodes with power 5 when a player tries to sleep in the Nether or the End — a blast stronger than TNT (4) yet weaker than a charged creeper (6). A light gray dye recolors a bed of any color into Light Gray Bed on the crafting grid, so an existing bed of another color converts with one dye. Shepherd villagers sell beds of any color, and villagers also need spare beds to produce offspring. Phantoms begin spawning after 3 in-game days without sleep, so sleeping in Light Gray Bed keeps phantoms away. Light Gray Bed drops itself when broken, and no tool speeds up the breaking.
