Lapis Ore drops the deep blue dye and pigment that powers enchanting tables and tints countless decorative blocks.
Description
Mining yields four to nine lapis lazuli per block, with extra under Fortune. The pigment has two main uses. First, it is consumed alongside experience levels at every enchanting table operation — each enchanted item costs one to three lapis on top of the level cost. Second, it functions as a primary blue dye, colouring wool, terracotta, glass, candles, and concrete powder, and combining with other dyes to produce purple, magenta, light blue, and cyan. Nine lapis compress into a decorative blue block; Silk Touch returns the ore intact.

Search near Y=0
Lapis Lazuli Ore is most common around Y=0 in the Overworld, so branch mining near that height finds more blue ore than random cave walking.

Use a stone pickaxe or better
Lapis Lazuli Ore requires at least a stone pickaxe. A wooden pickaxe or hand mining breaks the block without useful lapis lazuli drops.

Choose Fortune or Silk Touch
Fortune increases the normal 4-9 lapis lazuli drop, while Silk Touch keeps Lapis Lazuli Ore as a placeable ore block for storage or decoration.

Spend lapis on enchanting and dye
Use lapis lazuli at an enchanting table in 1-3 item costs, or craft blue dye, blue blocks, and mixed colors such as cyan and purple.
Lapis Lazuli Ore is not craftable in vanilla Minecraft. The practical loop is mining the ore, then using lapis lazuli for enchanting and blue dye recipes.
