Description

Iron Chestplate is the mid-tier chest armor in Minecraft, granting 6 armor points (three full armor icons) to shield the player's torso. You craft it from 8 iron ingots arranged in a chestplate shape on the 3×3 grid, making it one of the most accessible durable armor pieces once you have mined a couple of iron veins. Worn in the chest slot, the Iron Chestplate has 240 durability (241 on Bedrock) and absorbs more damage than chainmail, golden, or leather chestplates, sitting only below diamond and netherite. Protection, Thorns, and Unbreaking are available on an enchanting table, while Mending is a treasure enchantment that only an anvil can apply. Iron Chestplates also generate in stronghold altar and village weaponsmith chests, as enchanted loot in End City chests and trial chambers, and armored zombies or skeletons can drop one rarely. Repair a worn chestplate on an anvil with iron ingots, or smelt it into an iron nugget.

How to craft and use an Iron Chestplate in Minecraft

    Gather 8 iron ingots

    Mine iron ore with a stone pickaxe or better, then smelt the raw iron in a furnace until you have 8 iron ingots.

    Lay out the chestplate shape

    On a crafting table, fill every cell of the 3×3 grid except the top-center cell, which stays empty for the neck opening.

    Equip the chestplate

    Drag it into the chest armor slot, or hold it and right-click to put it on instantly.

    Enchant for more defense

    Add Protection IV or Unbreaking III on an enchanting table; Mending is a treasure enchantment, so apply it with an anvil instead.

    Repair when it wears down

    Combine two damaged chestplates or add iron ingots on an anvil to restore durability.

Good to know

Armored zombies and skeletons can spawn already wearing an iron chestplate and may drop it rarely when killed.
