Gray Stained Glass is the gray-dyed variant of the glass block: surrounding one gray dye with eight glass blocks on a crafting grid yields eight Gray Stained Glass blocks per craft. Java Edition received stained glass in 1.7.2, Bedrock Edition in 1.0.0, and Bedrock players could craft stained glass only from 1.2.0 onward. Gray Stained Glass never generates naturally, because natural generation covers only the magenta, brown, black, light gray, and white colors, so crafting stays the sole source. Gray Stained Glass is transparent, emits no light, never burns, and never catches fire from lava, with hardness 0.3 and blast resistance 0.3. Gray Stained Glass drops itself only under a Silk Touch tool, and every tool mines at the same speed.
Gray Stained Glass works as a smoky, neutral window block for industrial, modern, and stone-gray builds where saturated colors distract. Mobs cannot normally spawn on Gray Stained Glass, and hostile mobs cannot see players through stained glass, which mobs treat as completely opaque. Gray Stained Glass placed anywhere above a beacon recolors the beacon beam gray: the first stained glass block sets the beam color, and each additional stained glass block averages its color into the beam. Redstone dust, redstone repeaters, and rails can sit on top of Gray Stained Glass since Java Edition 1.14. Torches have been placeable on stained glass since Java Edition 1.8.
