Grass Block is the iconic green-topped surface of the Overworld — spreads onto dirt, supports plants, and tints by biome.
Description
The block spreads automatically: any dirt touching it sideways or on top, lit at light level four or higher, will gradually convert to the same surface over random ticks. Conversely, if the top face is buried by an opaque block, light fails, and the surface reverts to dirt within a few minutes. Bone meal applied to the top spawns short grass and small flowers across nearby tiles, the fastest way to decorate a meadow or fill a garden. Mining without silk touch drops plain dirt, so collecting the green variant for builds requires the appropriate enchantment.

Mine with Silk Touch
Use a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch to break a Grass Block and collect the block itself; any other tool or enchantment drops plain dirt instead.

Place it on the surface
Set the Grass Block down in an open, lit area so its green top face stays exposed to the sky or to light level four or higher.

Let it spread
Leave dirt blocks next to a Grass Block; over random ticks the green surface spreads to adjacent dirt as long as the light level stays high enough.

Decorate with bone meal
Right-click the top of a Grass Block with bone meal to instantly spawn short grass, ferns, and small flowers across nearby tiles.

Make a dirt path
Right-click the top with a shovel to convert a Grass Block into a dirt path for walkways and village roads.
A Grass Block reverts to dirt if its top face is covered by an opaque block or the light level drops too low, so keep the surface open and lit.

Can you craft a Grass Block in Minecraft?
No. Grass Block is not craftable. You obtain it by mining one with a Silk Touch shovel, or by letting grass spread naturally onto dirt.
How do you pick up a Grass Block?
Mine it with a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch. Without Silk Touch the block drops dirt instead of the green Grass Block.
Why did my Grass Block turn to dirt?
