Description

Firework Star is the crafting component that defines the color, shape, and special effects of every firework rocket in Minecraft. A Firework Star is made by combining one gunpowder with one to eight dyes on the crafting table, where each dye adds a color to the eventual explosion. Firework Star recipes are shapeless, so the dye positions do not matter, and a single craft can blend up to eight distinct colors into one burst. Firework Star was added in Java Edition 1.4.6 and exists in both Java and Bedrock Edition.

Firework Star supports optional modifiers that change the explosion shape and finish: a gold nugget makes a star-shaped burst, a fire charge creates a large ball, a feather produces a willow burst, and any mob head forms a creeper-shaped explosion. Adding glowstone dust gives a twinkle (flicker) crackle, while a diamond adds a fading trail. Re-crafting a finished Firework Star with extra dye sets the fade-out colors. To launch the effect, combine the finished Firework Star with paper and one to three gunpowder to craft a Firework Rocket. Build a Firework Star palette first when planning large New Year or victory displays, because the star locks in every visual detail before the rocket is assembled.

How to craft a Firework Star in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Open the crafting table

Open a 3x3 crafting grid; a Firework Star recipe is shapeless and needs the full crafting table, not the 2x2 inventory grid.

  2. 2

    Add gunpowder and dye

Place one gunpowder and one to eight dyes in any cells. Each dye adds one color to the final firework explosion.

  3. 3

    Add a shape modifier (optional)

Add a gold nugget for a star, a fire charge for a large ball, a feather for a willow burst, or a mob head for a creeper shape.

  4. 4

    Add an effect modifier (optional)

Include glowstone dust for a twinkle crackle or a diamond for a fading trail. Re-craft the star with more dye to set fade-out colors.

  5. 5

    Craft a Firework Rocket

Combine the finished Firework Star with paper and one to three gunpowder to build the rocket that carries the effect into the sky.

Bedrock difference

In Bedrock Edition a Firework Star is required for colored and shaped explosions; rockets without a star simply launch with no colored burst.
