Dried Kelp Block
Compact green storage block of dried kelp; long-burning fuel for furnaces.
Description
The most useful property is fuel value: the block burns in a furnace, blast furnace or smoker for 200 seconds, smelting up to twenty items per block. That number outpaces coal on a per-block basis and turns kelp into a renewable, low-cost fuel pipeline once a small farm with bone meal automation is running. Hoppers feed a furnace stack from a bulk storage of these blocks without any rebatching.
Mechanically the block is solid, full-cube and breaks fastest with a hoe, although any tool works. It does not catch fire, ignites in lava only when directly exposed and floats on water if a column of these blocks would otherwise hover, so plain underwater pillars are still possible without breakage from currents.

How to use a Dried Kelp Block in Minecraft
-
1
Craft the block
Fill a 3×3 crafting grid with nine dried kelp to make one dried kelp block; the recipe reverses one block back into nine dried kelp.
-
2
Store or decorate
Stack the blocks in a chest as compact fuel storage, or place them as quiet green panels in coastal and jungle builds.
-
3
Burn it as furnace fuel
Put the block in the fuel slot of a furnace, blast furnace or smoker; it burns 200 seconds and smelts 20 items per block.
-
4
Automate with hoppers
Feed blocks from a chest into a furnace array through hoppers for a hands-free, renewable smelting line.
One dried kelp block smelts 20 items, more than a piece of coal (8), but smelting it never returns dried kelp — reverse-craft the block in the grid to recover the nine items.

Frequently asked questions
How do you make a dried kelp block?
Place nine dried kelp in a 3×3 crafting grid to get one dried kelp block; the recipe also reverses one block back into nine dried kelp.
How long does a dried kelp block burn?
It burns for 200 seconds and smelts up to 20 items in a furnace, blast furnace or smoker.
Is a dried kelp block good fuel?
Yes. Per block it smelts 20 items versus 8 for coal, and kelp is fully renewable, so it makes cheap bulk fuel.
Can you eat a dried kelp block?
No. You eat dried kelp itself; the block is only a storage and fuel form and cannot be eaten directly.
What is the fastest tool to break it?
A hoe breaks it fastest, but any tool or your bare hand works because the block has low hardness.
What version added the dried kelp block?
It arrived in Java Edition 1.13 and Bedrock Edition 1.4.0 as part of the Update Aquatic.
