Description

Diamond ore is one of the most sought-after blocks in Minecraft. It generates rarely between Y=16 and Y=-64 in the Overworld, with the highest density around Y=-58. An iron pickaxe or better is required to mine it; using a wooden or stone pickaxe yields nothing. Without Silk Touch, diamond ore drops a single diamond (or up to four with Fortune III); with Silk Touch, it drops the ore block itself. Diamonds are the third-tier crafting material and are required for a full diamond toolset, enchanting tables, jukeboxes, and the upgrade template path leading to Netherite gear.

Java & Bedrock Guide

How to mine Diamond Ore in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Dig down to Y=-58

Travel to layer Y=-58 in the Overworld, where diamond ore generates at its highest density. Press F3 in Java Edition to read your current Y coordinate.

  2. 2

Bring an iron pickaxe or better

Equip an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe. Wooden and stone pickaxes break the block but drop nothing.

  3. 3

    Strip-mine carefully near lava

Diamonds often generate near lava pockets at deep levels, so carry water or a fire-resistance potion and seal lava before mining.

  4. 4

    Use Fortune or Silk Touch

Mine with a Fortune III pickaxe for up to four diamonds per ore, or use Silk Touch to collect the ore block itself for display or later processing.

Mining level

Since the 1.18 Caves & Cliffs update, diamond ore reaches down to Y=-64; the old pre-1.18 sweet spot of Y=11 no longer applies.
