Description

Cooked Mutton is the cooked food item obtained by smelting raw mutton in a furnace, smoker, or over a campfire in Minecraft. Six hunger points and 9.6 saturation make Cooked Mutton one of the most filling meats in the game, far ahead of Cooked Chicken or Cooked Cod in hunger-bar staying time. Sheep also drop Cooked Mutton directly when they die by fire or from a weapon carrying Fire Aspect, and the Looting enchantment raises the drop count. A fenced sheep pen turns breeding into a renewable supply of Cooked Mutton that lasts an entire survival trip.

A smoker finishes a stack of raw mutton twice as fast as a furnace, so a cooking station beside a sheep farm keeps Cooked Mutton flowing without a backlog. Tamed wolves eat Cooked Mutton to heal and to breed, and each piece speeds a baby wolf's growth by 10% of the remaining time. Butcher villagers add a second source, occasionally gifting Cooked Mutton to the player in Java Edition. For early survival, Cooked Mutton beats Cooked Beef and Cooked Porkchop in saturation per animal, because sheep are easier to pen and breed than cows or pigs.

How to get Cooked Mutton in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Gather raw mutton from sheep

Hunt sheep in plains, forest, or mountain biomes; each adult sheep drops 1 to 2 raw mutton, and the Looting enchantment raises the count further.

  2. 2

Cook the mutton in a smoker

Place raw mutton in the top slot of a smoker with any fuel below; the smoker finishes each piece of Cooked Mutton in 5 seconds, twice as fast as a furnace.

  3. 3

Use Fire Aspect for instant drops

Kill sheep with a sword carrying Fire Aspect so they drop Cooked Mutton directly, skipping the smelting step entirely.

  4. 4

    Feed and breed tamed wolves

Right-click a tamed wolf with Cooked Mutton to heal it, or feed two adult wolves to breed them and grow pups faster.

Important

Cooked Mutton cannot be eaten when the hunger bar is full, so keep a few pieces in reserve for wolf care rather than for player food.
