Coal Ore is the most common ore in Minecraft and the primary source of fuel for furnaces and torches.
Description
Coal is the workhorse fuel of Minecraft. One piece smelts eight items in a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker, and four pieces around a stick make four torches — the simplest reliable light source in the game. Coal also crafts into a coal block (nine pieces compressed into one), which burns for a full eighty items, making it ideal for long automated smelting runs. With Silk Touch, the ore drops as a block instead, useful for decoration or shipping the resource without losing Fortune potential.

Craft a wooden pickaxe
Coal Ore requires at least a wooden pickaxe to drop coal. Craft a wooden pickaxe using three planks and two sticks on a crafting table. Stone, iron, diamond, and netherite pickaxes all work and mine Coal Ore faster.

Find Coal Ore
Coal Ore generates from Y=0 to Y=136 in the Overworld, with the highest concentration around Y=96. Look at exposed mountain cliffs, cave walls, and ravine faces — Coal Ore is visible on the surface more often than any other ore.

Mine the block
Left-click and hold on Coal Ore until it breaks. A standard mine drops 1 piece of coal. Collect the dropped item before it despawns — items disappear after 5 minutes on the ground.

Enchant with Fortune for extra drops
Fortune I gives 1–2 coal per block, Fortune II gives 1–3, and Fortune III gives 1–4 coal per block. Enchanting your pickaxe with Fortune III before a mining run significantly multiplies your coal yield without breaking extra blocks.

Use Silk Touch to collect the block itself
A Silk Touch pickaxe drops the Coal Ore block rather than coal. Use this to stockpile unprocessed ore, move the block for decoration, or preserve the option to apply Fortune later — note that smelting the ore block gives only 1 coal regardless of Fortune.
Below Y=0, Coal Ore appears as Deepslate Coal Ore. It has a higher blast resistance (9 vs 3) and takes slightly longer to mine, but drops the same coal item and works as identical fuel.
