Description
Coal Ore generates throughout the Overworld in veins of up to seventeen blocks, exposed in mountain cliffs, cave walls, and deep underground. It is the first ore most players encounter and remains useful for the entire game. A wooden pickaxe is the minimum tool required — anything weaker drops nothing. Mining the block yields one piece of coal, plus extra rolls if the pickaxe carries the Fortune enchantment.
Coal is the workhorse fuel of Minecraft. One piece smelts eight items in a furnace, blast furnace, or smoker, and four pieces around a stick make four torches — the simplest reliable light source in the game. Coal also crafts into a coal block (nine pieces compressed into one), which burns for a full eighty items, making it ideal for long automated smelting runs. With Silk Touch, the ore drops as a block instead, useful for decoration or shipping the resource without losing Fortune potential.
