A second recipe turns six blue stained glass blocks into sixteen panes — 2⅔ panes per block — so a window built from panes reaches up to 2⅔ times the area of a window built from the same glass as solid blocks. Blue Stained Glass Pane breaks at the same speed with any tool, but drops itself only when broken with a tool carrying Silk Touch (an enchantment that makes blocks drop in item form); without Silk Touch, a broken pane leaves no drop.

Placed alone, Blue Stained Glass Pane stands as a slim 2×2-pixel post and stretches into flat sheets, curves, T-junctions, or crosses beside solid blocks, while horizontal glass surfaces still require stained glass blocks. Water can share a block space with Blue Stained Glass Pane, torches can sit on top of panes since Java Edition 1.14.3, and a beacon beam changes color when shining through stained panes. Village temples generate only white, yellow, orange, red, and brown panes, so every Blue Stained Glass Pane in a world arrives from a crafting table or, since Java Edition 1.20, from trail ruins loot.
