Blue Ice
Blue Ice creates the fastest boat tracks in Minecraft and never melts near light sources.
Description
Blue Ice lets a boat reach about 72.7 blocks per second on a straight, level track, making Blue Ice valuable for long Nether highways and transport links between distant bases. A Nether route multiplies the benefit because one block travelled in the Nether corresponds to eight blocks in the Overworld. Builders usually place Blue Ice only under the boat's path and add guardrails or walls to prevent collisions. Blue Ice also works as a compact basalt-generator component when flowing lava touches Blue Ice beside soul soil, giving technical players a second practical use beyond transport.
Build guide
How to build a fast Blue Ice boat road
-
1
Craft or mine Blue Ice
Craft each Blue Ice block from 9 Packed Ice, or mine naturally generated Blue Ice with a Silk Touch pickaxe.
-
2
Lay a straight track
Place a narrow, level strip of Blue Ice along the route; straight sections preserve the boat's high speed.
-
3
Add side barriers
Build low walls or guardrails beside the Blue Ice so the boat cannot slide off the track or strike nearby terrain.
-
4
Launch the boat
Place a boat on the Blue Ice, enter it, and accelerate carefully before turns or junctions.
One block travelled in the Nether corresponds to eight blocks in the Overworld, so Nether Blue Ice roads provide the largest distance saving.

Frequently asked questions
How do you craft Blue Ice?
Blue Ice is crafted by filling a 3×3 crafting grid with 9 Packed Ice blocks. Producing those ingredients from regular Ice requires 81 Ice blocks in total.
How fast are boats on Blue Ice?
A boat can travel at about 72.7 blocks per second on a straight, level Blue Ice track.
Does Blue Ice melt near light?
Blue Ice does not melt near torches, glowstone, sunlight, or other bright light sources.
How do you mine Blue Ice?
Blue Ice must be mined with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch. Breaking Blue Ice without Silk Touch drops nothing.
What is Blue Ice used for in a basalt generator?
Flowing lava forms basalt when it contacts Blue Ice while soul soil is placed in the required adjacent position.
