Description

Blackstone Slab is a half-height version of blackstone, the dark stone that generates only in the Nether, and three blackstone blocks placed in one crafting-table row yield six Blackstone Slabs. A stonecutter offers a second recipe: one blackstone block becomes two Blackstone Slabs. Blackstone Slabs also generate inside bastion remnants. Any pickaxe — even a wooden one — harvests Blackstone Slab, while mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Blackstone Slab has a hardness of 2, a blast resistance (explosion protection) of 6, and stacks up to 64 slabs.

Builders value Blackstone Slab for layered floors, smooth staircases, and dark accents that echo the stonework of bastion remnants. A note block placed on Blackstone Slab plays the bass drum. Piglin bartering — handing a gold ingot to a piglin — returns 8–16 blackstone blocks per ingot, making Blackstone Slab a renewable building material (possible to farm endlessly). Whether mined in the basalt deltas or bartered from piglins, Blackstone Slab keeps black Nether architecture within reach of survival players.

Guide

How to get Blackstone Slabs in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Collect blackstone in the Nether

Enter the Nether and mine blackstone with any pickaxe: the basalt deltas biome holds the largest deposits, and separate patches of blackstone appear in other Nether biomes and in bastion remnants.

  2. 2

Craft six slabs from three blocks

Place three blackstone blocks in one row of a crafting grid to receive six Blackstone Slabs.

  3. 3

    Cut slabs with a stonecutter

Use a stonecutter to turn a single blackstone block into two Blackstone Slabs — the same 1-to-2 ratio as the crafting recipe, one block at a time.

  4. 4

    Harvest slabs in bastion remnants

Find a bastion remnant in the Nether and mine the Blackstone Slabs built into the structure with any pickaxe.

Two slabs make one full block

Placing one Blackstone Slab on top of another combines both into a double slab that fills the entire block space.

Frequently asked questions

What pickaxe do you need to break a Blackstone Slab?

Blackstone Slab requires any pickaxe, and a wooden pickaxe already meets the minimum tier. Without a pickaxe, Blackstone Slab drops nothing.

Is Blackstone Slab flammable?

No. Blackstone Slab is not flammable and does not catch fire from lava.

Is Blackstone Slab renewable?

Yes. Piglins barter 8–16 blackstone blocks for one gold ingot, a mechanic added in Java Edition 1.16.2, so Blackstone Slab can be farmed endlessly.

Can Blackstone Slab hold water?

Yes. Blackstone Slab is waterloggable, meaning water can fill the block space the slab occupies instead of being displaced.

When was Blackstone Slab added to Minecraft?

Blackstone Slab was added in Java Edition 1.16 and Bedrock Edition 1.16.0.
