Black Terracotta is the dyed near-black form of terracotta, made 8 blocks at a time from one black dye for monochrome builds.
Description
Smelting converts Black Terracotta into Black Glazed Terracotta, the patterned glossy variant used for decorative floors. The flat matte surface of Black Terracotta anchors modern facades, industrial interiors, and monochrome palettes that need a matte near-black block. On a map, Black Terracotta paints its own color, one unique map shade per terracotta color since Java 1.12.

Open a crafting table
The recipe fills all nine cells of the crafting grid, so use a crafting table — the 2×2 inventory grid cannot hold eight terracotta blocks plus one dye.

Fill the ring with terracotta
Place eight terracotta blocks into every cell of the grid except the center one.

Put black dye in the center
Place one black dye into the middle cell; on Bedrock Edition an ink sac works in the same slot.

Collect 8 Black Terracotta
Drag the 8 Black Terracotta from the result slot into the inventory — one craft dyes eight blocks at once.
No recipe changes or removes the black color from dyed terracotta, so dye only as many blocks as the current build needs.

Nowhere: badlands terracotta layers produce only red, orange, yellow, brown, white, and light gray terracotta, and villages or desert pyramids use other colors. Black Terracotta comes from crafting with dye or from trading with a mason villager.

Any pickaxe, starting with a wooden pickaxe. A Black Terracotta block mined without a pickaxe drops nothing.
Is Black Terracotta fireproof?
