Black Glazed Terracotta is a decorative building block obtained by smelting black terracotta in a furnace: one stained block turns into one glazed block and grants 0.1 experience. Glazed terracotta joined Minecraft in Java Edition 1.12 and Bedrock Edition 1.1.0, and Black Glazed Terracotta also generates naturally in trail ruins, the structures added in update 1.20. Mining Black Glazed Terracotta requires a pickaxe — a wooden pickaxe already works — and mining without a pickaxe drops nothing. Black Glazed Terracotta has a hardness of 1.4, a blast resistance of 1.4, does not burn, does not catch fire from lava, and stacks to 64.

Black Glazed Terracotta is a renewable resource: an expert-level mason villager sells one glazed terracotta of every color for 1 emerald each, with 12 trades in stock. When placed, the texture of Black Glazed Terracotta rotates relative to the direction the player faces, and four same-color blocks oriented correctly in a 2×2 grid align into one continuous pattern — the reason builders tile floors and murals with glazed terracotta. Black Glazed Terracotta does not stick to slime blocks or honey blocks and cannot be pulled by sticky pistons. Ordinary pistons still push Black Glazed Terracotta, so builders move glazed tiles with piston doors.
