Description

Ancient Debris generates exclusively in the Nether between y=8 and y=119, with maximum density around y=15. Its visual is unique: a charred, semi-organic block with twisted dark metal veins curling through it, sitting in pockets of a one-to-three blocks. Crucially, the block is blast-proof — it cannot be destroyed by TNT, ghast fireballs, or beds-exploding, which is exactly the trick most players use to find it efficiently.

A diamond pickaxe is the minimum required tool. Smelting one piece of debris in a furnace produces a netherite scrap; four scraps plus four gold ingots craft a netherite ingot, which then upgrades diamond gear into the strongest tier in the game via a smithing table. The ore drops itself directly when mined, so Silk Touch is unnecessary. Most players bring an enchanted bed or TNT down to y=15, plant the explosive in a small pocket, and detonate — the surrounding netherrack vaporizes while every Ancient Debris block remains intact and ready to collect.

How to find and mine Ancient Debris in Minecraft

  1. 1

Dig down to y=15 in the Nether

Ancient Debris is most common around y=15, so branch-mine or tunnel at that height deep inside the Nether.

  2. 2

    Blast with beds or TNT

Ancient Debris has 1200 blast resistance, so bed explosions and TNT clear surrounding netherrack while leaving the ore intact.

  3. 3

Mine the ore with a diamond pickaxe

A diamond or netherite pickaxe is required; the block drops itself, so Silk Touch is not needed.

  4. 4

    Smelt debris into netherite scrap

Put each Ancient Debris in a furnace or blast furnace to get one netherite scrap per block.

  5. 5

    Craft a netherite ingot

Combine 4 netherite scraps with 4 gold ingots, then use a smithing table with the netherite upgrade template to upgrade diamond gear.

Lava safety

Ancient Debris floats on lava instead of burning, so pieces freed by a blast stay recoverable — but never bed-mine beside a lava lake without Fire Resistance.

Frequently asked questions

What Y level is best for Ancient Debris?

Ancient Debris is most abundant around y=15 in the Nether, though it can generate anywhere from y=8 to y=119.

Can you craft Ancient Debris?

No. Ancient Debris cannot be crafted; it only generates naturally in the Nether and must be mined.

What pickaxe do you need to mine Ancient Debris?

A diamond or netherite pickaxe is required. Lower-tier pickaxes break the block without dropping anything.

Do you need Silk Touch for Ancient Debris?

No. Ancient Debris drops itself when mined with a diamond or netherite pickaxe.

Why do players use beds to mine it?

Ancient Debris has very high blast resistance, so bed explosions destroy surrounding netherrack while leaving the ore intact and easy to collect.

What version added Ancient Debris?

Ancient Debris was added in Java and Bedrock Edition 1.16, the Nether Update.
