Description

Turtle Egg is a fragile decoration block that baby sea turtles hatch from in Minecraft. Two adult turtles breed when fed seagrass, after which the pregnant turtle swims back to its home beach and lays one to four eggs on sand or red sand. A turtle egg block passes through three visible cracking stages before it hatches, and eggs hatch faster at night. You can only collect a turtle egg with a Silk Touch tool — mining it any other way destroys it and drops nothing. The block is extremely vulnerable: players and most mobs trample and break eggs by jumping or walking on them, while zombies, husks, drowned, and foxes actively hunt eggs to crush them. Protect a clutch with fences, slabs, or by lighting the beach. When an egg finally hatches, a baby turtle emerges; once grown, it drops a single scute, and five scutes craft a turtle shell helmet that grants underwater breathing. Turtle Egg was added in Java Edition 1.13 and exists in both Java and Bedrock editions.

How to hatch a Turtle Egg in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Breed two turtles

Feed two adult turtles seagrass so they enter love mode; one becomes pregnant and swims toward its home beach.

  2. 2

    Wait for the eggs

Let the pregnant turtle dig into sand or red sand and lay a block holding one to four turtle eggs.

  3. 3

    Protect the clutch

Fence off the beach and light it with torches so zombies, husks, drowned, and foxes cannot reach and trample the eggs.

  4. 4

    Let them hatch at night

Leave the eggs undisturbed; they crack through three stages and hatch fastest during night time.

  5. 5

    Collect scutes

Let each baby turtle grow into an adult to drop one scute, then combine five scutes into a turtle shell helmet.

Important

Use a Silk Touch tool to move a turtle egg — any other mining destroys it and drops nothing. Eggs only hatch on sand or red sand.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Turtle Egg?

No, turtle eggs cannot be crafted. Two adult turtles must be fed seagrass to breed, after which one lays the eggs on sand.

How do you pick up a Turtle Egg?

Mine it with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Without Silk Touch the block breaks and drops nothing.

Why do my Turtle Eggs keep disappearing?

Zombies, husks, drowned, and foxes seek out and trample eggs, and players break them by jumping on them. Light and fence the area to protect them.

Do Turtle Eggs hatch faster at night?

Yes. Turtle eggs advance through their three cracking stages and hatch much more quickly during night time.

What do baby turtles give you?

A baby turtle drops one scute when it grows into an adult, and five scutes craft a turtle shell helmet that grants underwater breathing.
