Description

Tropical Fish Spawn Egg is a Creative-only item in Minecraft that spawns a single tropical fish when used on a block or in water. The Tropical Fish Spawn Egg has a white base with orange spots — the standard two-tone coloring shared by aquatic spawn eggs. Introduced in Java Edition 1.13 (the Update Aquatic), the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg cannot be crafted, mined, or obtained in Survival; it appears only in the Creative inventory or through the /give command. Each use produces one of roughly 2,700 possible tropical fish variants, generated from two body shapes, 15 base colors, six patterns, and 15 pattern colors.

Players use the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg to stock aquariums, decorate ocean builds, and feed pet axolotls, which hunt tropical fish in the wild. Wild tropical fish spawn naturally in warm and lukewarm ocean biomes and in lush caves, but the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg lets builders place them anywhere instantly. Spawn the fish directly into water, since a tropical fish suffocates on land — aim the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg at a water source block for the best result.

How to use the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Open the Creative inventory

Spawn eggs are Creative-only, so open the Creative inventory and search for 'Tropical Fish Spawn Egg', or run the /give command to obtain one.

  2. 2

    Aim at water

Point the crosshair at a water source block; a tropical fish suffocates on land, so spawning it into water keeps the fish alive.

  3. 3

    Spawn the fish

Right-click (or tap) with the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg to spawn one tropical fish with a random color and pattern.

  4. 4

    Repeat for variety

Use the Tropical Fish Spawn Egg again to add more fish — each spawn rolls a new look from the ~2,700 possible combinations.

Bedrock note

In Bedrock Edition the spawn egg also appears in the Creative inventory; in Java Edition each use is always a random variant.
