Description

Tropical Fish is a raw food item in Minecraft, obtained by killing the tropical fish mob that swims in warm oceans, lukewarm oceans, deep lukewarm oceans, and lush caves, or by fishing in any water. Tropical Fish was added in Java Edition 1.13, the Update Aquatic, and drops as a single uniform item even though the live mob has 3,584 color-and-pattern combinations. Eaten raw, Tropical Fish restores just 1 hunger point (half a drumstick) and 0.2 saturation, making it one of the weakest foods in the game.

Tropical Fish cannot be cooked in a furnace or smoker — no cooked variant exists, unlike cod and salmon. The main reason players collect Tropical Fish is the axolotl: scooping one of these fish with a water bucket creates a Bucket of Tropical Fish, the only food that breeds and leads axolotls. Tropical Fish is renewable through fishing, so an AFK fish farm or a simple rod-and-hook spot beside a warm ocean keeps a steady supply for axolotl breeding and emergency food.

How to get and use Tropical Fish in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a warm ocean

Travel to a warm, lukewarm, or deep lukewarm ocean, or a lush cave, where tropical fish mobs spawn in groups.

  2. 2

    Catch the fish

Kill a tropical fish to drop the raw Tropical Fish item, or cast a fishing rod in any water to reel one in.

  3. 3

    Bucket it for axolotls

Right-click a tropical fish with a water bucket to make a Bucket of Tropical Fish, the only item that breeds axolotls.

  4. 4

    Eat it as backup food

Hold Tropical Fish and use it to restore 1 hunger point when no better food is available; it cannot be cooked.

Important

Tropical Fish has no cooked version. To breed axolotls you need the Bucket of Tropical Fish, not the raw item held in your hand.
