Description

Short Grass is a one-block-tall non-solid plant that generates densely across Plains, Forest, Taiga, Savanna and most other grassy biomes in Minecraft. It was renamed from "Grass" to "Short Grass" in Java Edition 1.20.3 to remove the long-standing confusion with the Grass Block. The plant can be placed on Grass Block, Dirt, Coarse Dirt, Podzol, Mycelium, Rooted Dirt, Moss Block and Farmland, and it breaks instantly with bare hands or any tool. Breaking Short Grass has roughly a 1/8 chance of dropping Wheat Seeds, which is one of the earliest renewable seed sources at the start of a survival world. Using Bone Meal on a Grass Block grows additional Short Grass, Tall Grass and biome-appropriate flowers in a 7x7 area around the player. Short Grass is flammable and burns away when touched by lava or fire. It also provides decorative ground cover for builds, paths and farms.

Java vs Bedrock

Bedrock Edition still labels the block as "Grass" in some menus, but it is the same Short Grass block as Java 1.20.3+ and behaves identically.
