How to get Wheat Seeds from Short Grass in Minecraft
-
1
Find a grassy biome
Travel to Plains, Forest or Savanna where Short Grass spawns densely on top of Grass Blocks.
-
2
Break the grass
Punch Short Grass with your bare hand or any tool — it breaks instantly with no durability cost.
-
3
Pick up Wheat Seeds
Roughly 1 of every 8 Short Grass blocks drops Wheat Seeds; clearing a 10x10 patch usually nets 10+ seeds.
-
4
Bone-meal for more grass
Right-click a Grass Block with Bone Meal to instantly grow more Short Grass, Tall Grass and biome flowers in a 7x7 area.
Bedrock Edition still labels the block as "Grass" in some menus, but it is the same Short Grass block as Java 1.20.3+ and behaves identically.

Frequently asked questions
Why was Grass renamed to Short Grass?
Mojang renamed the block in Java Edition 1.20.3 to remove the long-standing confusion with the Grass Block, which is the ground block underneath.
What is the drop chance for Wheat Seeds?
Breaking Short Grass has roughly a 1/8 chance of dropping a Wheat Seed. Bone-mealing a large area is the fastest way to farm starting seeds.
Can Short Grass be placed under water?
No. Short Grass is a regular dry land plant and cannot be waterlogged or placed in a flowing water column.
Does Short Grass burn?
Yes. Short Grass is flammable and is destroyed instantly by lava or spreading fire from a nearby block.
Is Short Grass available in Bedrock Edition?
Yes. Bedrock has the same block; some menus still label it "Grass" but it behaves identically to Java's Short Grass.
