Rooted Dirt is a dirt variant added in Minecraft Java Edition 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part I) and Bedrock 1.17. Its texture is brown soil interlaced with thin pale roots, the visual signature of the lush caves biome. The block generates as the floor of lush caves and directly beneath azalea trees on the surface, where it marks the entrance to a lush cave below.

Rooted Dirt drops itself when broken with any tool, so no Silk Touch is needed to collect it; a Shovel mines it fastest. Using a Hoe on Rooted Dirt converts it back to plain dirt and drops one Hanging Roots item, which is the only renewable way to farm Hanging Roots. Applying Bone Meal to the underside of a Rooted Dirt block grows Hanging Roots in the air below it, recreating the curtain effect of a natural lush cave. Saplings, flowers, azalea, and mushrooms can be placed on top of it, but grass and mycelium will not spread onto it, and a Hoe turns it to dirt rather than tilling it into farmland.
