Description

Powder Snow is a trap block in Minecraft that entities sink into instead of standing on, added in Java Edition 1.17. It generates naturally inside cauldrons across snowy mountain biomes — Snowy Slopes, Grove, Jagged Peaks and Frozen Peaks — and builds up whenever snow falls into a cauldron during a snowstorm. Collect it by using an empty bucket on the block, which gives a Powder Snow Bucket you can place anywhere. Players and most mobs fall through Powder Snow and start taking freeze damage after a few seconds, making it a popular mob trap and a hazard near cold-biome bases. Wear any piece of leather armor to stay immune to freezing, and equip leather boots to walk across the surface without sinking. Rabbits, foxes and striders cross it naturally. Falling into Powder Snow also cancels all fall damage, so it doubles as a safe landing pad. Hold the jump key to climb upward through the block, or sneak to sink down. A skeleton that freezes to death inside Powder Snow converts into a stray.

How to use Powder Snow in Minecraft

    Get powder snow

    Place a cauldron in a snowy mountain biome and let snowfall fill it, or scoop existing powder snow from Grove and Jagged Peaks.

    Collect it with a bucket

    Use an empty bucket on the block to receive a Powder Snow Bucket that holds one block of powder snow.

    Place your trap

    Use the Powder Snow Bucket to set the block where mobs or players will fall through and start to sink.

    Stay protected

    Equip leather boots to walk on the surface and wear any leather armor to avoid freeze damage while building.

Entities without leather armor freeze after about 7 seconds inside powder snow, and a skeleton that freezes to death turns into a stray.
