Description

Phantom Membrane is an item in Minecraft used to repair Elytra at an anvil and to brew the Potion of Slow Falling. Phantom Membrane drops from Phantoms when killed, yielding 0-1 per phantom and up to 0-4 with a Looting III sword. Cats may also bring Phantom Membrane as a morning gift after sleeping near their owner. The item was added in Java Edition 1.13, the Update Aquatic, together with the phantom mob. At an anvil, combining a damaged Elytra with one Phantom Membrane restores 108 durability, which equals 25% of the Elytra's maximum 432 durability. In a Brewing Stand, Phantom Membrane added to an Awkward Potion produces the Potion of Slow Falling, lasting 1:30, or 4:00 when extended with Redstone Dust. Phantoms spawn only at night above players who have not slept for at least three in-game days, tying Phantom Membrane farming to the insomnia mechanic. Phantom Membrane cannot be crafted from other materials and stacks to 64 in Minecraft.

How to use Phantom Membrane in Minecraft

    Stay awake for at least three in-game days to trigger Phantom spawns at night. Kill Phantoms with a sword enchanted with Looting III to get up to 4 Phantom Membrane per phantom.

    Place a damaged Elytra in the first anvil slot and a Phantom Membrane in the second slot. Each Phantom Membrane restores 108 durability, so 4 membranes fully repair an Elytra from zero.

    Brew the Potion of Slow Falling

    Place an Awkward Potion in the Brewing Stand and add a Phantom Membrane on top. The result is a Potion of Slow Falling lasting 1:30 in Minecraft.

    Extend the Slow Falling effect

    Add Redstone Dust to the Potion of Slow Falling to extend its duration to 4:00. Use it to survive Elytra crashes and high falls without taking fall damage.

Looting tip

A sword with Looting III increases the maximum Phantom Membrane drop from 1 to 4 per phantom kill, making it the fastest farming method.
