Description

Horn Coral Fan is the flat, fan-shaped yellow coral that grows attached to coral reef structures in warm ocean biomes. The block was added to Minecraft in Java Edition 1.13 (snapshot 18w11a) and Bedrock Edition 1.4.0, alongside the four other coral colors — tube, brain, bubble, and fire. Horn Coral Fan breaks instantly with any tool, but drops only when mined with a Silk Touch enchanted pickaxe, shears, or another Silk Touch tool; without Silk Touch the block simply vanishes. The renewable tag applies because applying bone meal to coral blocks in a warm ocean can generate fresh Horn Coral Fan colonies, making the live block farmable.

Outside of water, Horn Coral Fan dries out and turns into its gray, dead counterpart — in Java Edition this happens after roughly 3 to 5 seconds, while Bedrock Edition kills the block the instant water is removed. The dead variant is permanent: no mechanic in Minecraft reverts dead coral back to its live, colored form, so the live yellow fan is the only version worth placing in builds. Builders use Horn Coral Fan for vivid yellow underwater accents in aquariums, reef-themed corridors, and tropical port walls, pairing the warm tone with Prismarine and Sea Lanterns. A hardness of 0 and a blast resistance of 0 mean creeper explosions and TNT clear coral reefs effortlessly, so protect Horn Coral Fan with surrounding terrain or glass.

Guide

How to obtain a Horn Coral Fan in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a warm-ocean coral reef

Travel to a warm ocean biome and search the seabed for the large, multi-colored coral reef structures where Horn Coral Fan spawns.

  2. 2

    Equip a Silk Touch tool

Bring a pickaxe or shears enchanted with Silk Touch, because mining the live block without Silk Touch destroys it and yields no drop.

  3. 3

    Mine the yellow fan

Break the Horn Coral Fan block; the live item drops only because Silk Touch preserves its colored, living state through the harvest.

  4. 4

    Place the fan underwater

Set Horn Coral Fan into a waterlogged or fully submerged spot, since exposure to air kills live coral within seconds and the change is permanent.

Without water it dies

Horn Coral Fan converts to Dead Horn Coral Fan roughly 3 to 5 seconds after losing water in Java Edition, and instantly in Bedrock Edition — the dead gray form cannot be revived.
