Emerald Ore

Emerald Ore is the rarest gem ore in Minecraft — found only in mountains, traded with villagers as the universal currency.

Description

Emerald Ore generates only in mountain biomes — windswept peaks, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, and stony shores — between roughly y=−16 and y=256. It does not generate in veins like other ores; instead, single ore blocks scatter sparsely through the surrounding stone, making each one a small treasure hunt rather than a vein to mine. An iron pickaxe or better is required.

Each block drops one emerald, with bonus rolls if the pickaxe carries Fortune. Emeralds have one major use: they are the currency of villager trading. Players exchange them for enchanted books, diamond gear, mended tools, and rarities like elytra repair via mending books, all without ever crafting them. Nine emeralds compress into a block, but the gem is so valuable that most players hoard rather than place. Silk Touch returns the ore as-is for collectors and decorators.

How to find Emerald Ore in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Head to a mountain biome

Emerald Ore generates only in mountain biomes — windswept peaks, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, meadows, and stony shores. No other biome contains Emerald Ore.

  2. 2

    Dig high in the mountains

Emerald Ore spawns between y=-16 and y=320 but concentrates near the surface in mountain ranges, so search exposed cliffs and tunnel through stone around y=200 and above.

  3. 3

Use an iron pickaxe or better

Mine Emerald Ore with an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe. A wooden or stone pickaxe breaks the block but drops nothing.

  4. 4

    Add Fortune or Silk Touch

Fortune III drops up to four emeralds from one Emerald Ore block, while Silk Touch collects the ore block itself for display.

Trading beats mining

Emerald Ore never forms veins, so it is scattered and slow to farm. Most players earn emeralds far faster by trading sticks, crops, or coal with villagers.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft Emerald Ore?

No. Emerald Ore only generates naturally in mountain biomes and cannot be crafted. Placing nine emeralds in a crafting grid makes a Block of Emerald instead.

What tool do you need to mine Emerald Ore?

An iron pickaxe or better. A wooden or stone pickaxe breaks Emerald Ore without dropping any emeralds.

Which biomes contain Emerald Ore?

Only mountain biomes — windswept peaks, jagged peaks, frozen peaks, meadows, and stony shores. Emerald Ore appears nowhere else in the world.

Is mining Emerald Ore worth it?

Rarely. Emerald Ore spawns as single scattered blocks, so villager trading produces emeralds far faster than mining for them.

Does Fortune work on Emerald Ore?

Yes. Fortune III can drop up to four emeralds per block, while Silk Touch lets you collect the Emerald Ore block intact.
