Description

Dark Oak Leaves form the canopy of dark oak trees, the giant 2x2-trunked oaks that grow only in the Dark Forest biome of Minecraft. The dark olive foliage is denser and more saturated than plain Oak Leaves, which makes Dark Oak Leaves the go-to block for shadowed rooflines, haunted glades, and any build that needs a moody forest crown. Dark Oak Leaves are not craftable and never appear in a crafting grid; survival players obtain the block by breaking naturally generated trees with Shears or a Silk Touch tool, or by growing a dark oak tree from a 2x2 grid of four Dark Oak Saplings.
Breaking Dark Oak Leaves without Silk Touch or Shears triggers their drop table instead of yielding the block. A non-Silk-Touch break drops a Dark Oak Sapling at a 5% rate (1 in 20), one to two Sticks at 2% (1 in 50), and an Apple at 0.5% (1 in 200). Dark Oak Leaves are one of only two leaf blocks in Minecraft that drop Apples, the other being Oak Leaves. The Fortune enchantment raises all three drop rates, topping out at Fortune III. Dark Oak Leaves carry hardness 0.2 and blast resistance 0.2, burn away instantly when fire or lava touches them, and a Hoe is the fastest tool in modern Java and Bedrock editions.

Guide

How to obtain Dark Oak Leaves in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Locate a Dark Forest biome

Dark Oak Leaves appear only on dark oak trees that generate naturally inside the Dark Forest biome, so travel to that biome before harvesting.

  2. 2

Equip Shears or a Silk Touch tool

Use Shears or any tool enchanted with Silk Touch so the broken Dark Oak Leaves drop as a placed block instead of triggering the sapling drop table.

  3. 3

    Break the canopy blocks

Harvest the dark olive leaf blocks from the dark oak tree crown, and a Hoe with Silk Touch will mine Dark Oak Leaves fastest in modern Java and Bedrock editions.

  4. 4

    Grow your own supply

Plant four Dark Oak Saplings in a 2x2 grid on dirt or grass to grow a fresh dark oak tree, which then produces a new layer of Dark Oak Leaves.

  5. 5

    Avoid fire and lava

Keep Dark Oak Leaves away from lava and open flame, because the block is flammable and burns away instantly without dropping any saplings, sticks, or apples.

Tip

Breaking Dark Oak Leaves without Shears or Silk Touch yields no leaf block, but the Fortune enchantment raises the 5% sapling, 2% stick, and 0.5% apple drop rates up to Fortune III.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Dark Oak Leaves in Minecraft?

Dark Oak Leaves are harvested by breaking the dark oak tree canopy with Shears or any tool enchanted with Silk Touch, which makes the leaf block itself drop instead of the sapling table.

Where do Dark Oak Leaves naturally generate?

Dark Oak Leaves grow only on dark oak trees inside the Dark Forest biome, the overworld biome where these 2x2-trunked giant oaks generate. No other biome spawns dark oak trees naturally.

What do Dark Oak Leaves drop when broken?

Without Silk Touch or Shears, Dark Oak Leaves drop a Dark Oak Sapling at 5% (1 in 20), one to two Sticks at 2% (1 in 50), and an Apple at 0.5% (1 in 200). Fortune raises all three rates up to Fortune III.

Do Dark Oak Leaves drop Apples?

Yes, Dark Oak Leaves are one of only two leaf blocks in Minecraft that drop Apples, the other being Oak Leaves. The base apple drop rate is 0.5% (1 in 200) per broken leaf.

Are Dark Oak Leaves flammable?

Yes, Dark Oak Leaves are flammable and burn away instantly when fire or lava touches them, and leaves destroyed by fire drop no saplings, sticks, or apples at all.

Are Dark Oak Leaves renewable?

Yes, Dark Oak Leaves are renewable because players can grow an unlimited number of dark oak trees by planting four Dark Oak Saplings in a 2x2 grid and harvesting the canopy each time.
