Description

Chainmail Helmet is a head-slot armor piece in Minecraft that grants 2 armor points (one full armor icon) and 165 durability, the same durability as an Iron Helmet but with less protection. Unlike most gear, Chainmail Helmet has no survival crafting recipe — players obtain it through journeyman-level Armorer villager trades, as rare loot in generated structure chests, or from zombies and skeletons that spawn already wearing it and can drop the helmet on death. Chainmail Helmet works identically in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Chainmail Helmet can be enchanted on an enchanting table or anvil with Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Thorns III, Unbreaking III, and Mending, making it viable early-game head protection when iron or diamond is scarce. Because there is no chainmail ingot, you repair a Chainmail Helmet by combining two helmets on an anvil or grindstone, or by using the Mending enchantment to restore durability with experience orbs. Builders and collectors also keep Chainmail Helmet for its distinctive grey woven texture, which stands out from solid iron or gold helmets on armor stand displays.

How to get a Chainmail Helmet in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Trade with an Armorer villager

Level up an Armorer villager to journeyman or expert and look for a Chainmail Helmet trade exchanged for emeralds. Let the villager restock at its job-site block to refresh the offer.

  2. 2

    Search structure loot

Open chests in dungeons, strongholds, and other generated structures, where a Chainmail Helmet can appear rarely as plain or enchanted loot.

  3. 3

    Collect mob drops

Kill zombies or skeletons that spawned wearing a Chainmail Helmet; they have a small chance to drop the helmet, increased by the Looting enchantment.

  4. 4

    Enchant and equip

Place the Chainmail Helmet in your head slot and enchant it with Protection IV or Respiration III on an enchanting table for better defense.

Repair without ingots

Chainmail Helmet has no ingot, so repair it by combining two helmets on an anvil or grindstone, or apply Mending to restore durability with experience orbs.
