Description

Brain Coral Fan is one of five flat coral fan variants in Minecraft that generates naturally inside coral reef structures across warm ocean biomes. The block forms the signature pink, brain-like pattern recognizable on the seabed, and unlike solid coral blocks the fan occupies a thin non-solid layer attached to the sides of adjacent blocks. Players cannot craft a Brain Coral Fan at a crafting table; the only sources are natural generation and bone meal applied underwater inside a warm ocean, where each use has a chance to grow new coral fans nearby.

To collect a Brain Coral Fan, break the block with a pickaxe, axe, or any tool enchanted with Silk Touch — without Silk Touch the block simply drops nothing. The fan has hardness 0 and blast resistance 0, so it breaks instantly to any tool and cannot survive explosions. Brain Coral Fan must stay in water: in Java Edition it turns into a Dead Brain Coral Fan after 3 to 4.95 seconds out of water, and in Bedrock Edition it dies the moment the water is removed. The five coral fan variants are tube, brain, bubble, fire, and horn, all added in Java Edition 1.13 and Bedrock Edition 1.4.0.

Java Edition Guide

How to obtain and keep alive a Brain Coral Fan in Minecraft

  1. 1

    Find a warm ocean

Brain Coral Fan only generates inside coral reef structures in warm ocean biomes, so travel across the sea until the water is light blue and warm.

  2. 2

    Locate a pink coral fan

Dive to the seabed and look for the flat, brain-patterned pink fan attached to the sides of coral blocks; it stands out from the tube, bubble, fire, and horn variants.

  3. 3

    Mine it with Silk Touch

Equip a tool enchanted with Silk Touch and break the block; without Silk Touch the Brain Coral Fan drops nothing and is lost.

  4. 4

    Place it back in water

Place the Brain Coral Fan against the side of a block that is fully submerged, otherwise it will die and turn into a Dead Brain Coral Fan.

  5. 5

    Grow more with bone meal

Apply bone meal underwater on a warm-ocean seabed near living coral to have a chance of generating new Brain Coral Fans nearby, making the block renewable.

Edition difference

In Java Edition a Brain Coral Fan survives 3 to 4.95 seconds out of water before dying; in Bedrock Edition it dies instantly the moment water is removed.
