Description

Bone Block is a pillar-style decorative block crafted from nine bone meal in a 3×3 grid, and the recipe reverses — one Bone Block breaks back into nine bone meal, so it doubles as compact fertilizer storage. Its banded ivory texture suggests stacked vertebrae, and like a log the block has a directional axis: placement decides whether the bands run vertically or horizontally. Bone Block was added in Java Edition 1.10. In the world Bone Block forms fossils — buried skeletal structures in desert, swamp, and mangrove swamp biomes, where coal ore above Y=0 or diamond ore below Y=-8 replaces some of the bone blocks — and nether fossils in soul sand valleys in the Nether. Bone meal itself comes from skeleton-dropped bones or from a composter, so the block is fully renewable and cheap to mass-produce. Mine it with any pickaxe to recover the block; breaking it by hand drops nothing. Builders rely on Bone Block for arches, ribcages, ancient ruins, Halloween scenes, and as a warm light-toned alternative to white concrete or terracotta, especially paired with Calcite or Diorite.

Frequently asked questions

Can you craft a Bone Block?

Yes. Nine bone meal arranged in a 3×3 crafting grid make one Bone Block, and the recipe reverses to give nine bone meal back.

Where do Bone Blocks generate naturally?

They form fossils — buried skeletal structures underground in desert, swamp, and mangrove swamp biomes, with some bone blocks replaced by coal or diamond ore — and nether fossils in soul sand valleys in the Nether.

Is the Bone Block renewable?

Yes. Bone meal comes from skeleton bones and composters, both renewable, so you can mass-produce Bone Blocks endlessly.

What tool breaks a Bone Block?

Any pickaxe drops the block; mining it by hand or with other tools gives nothing.

Does the Bone Block change direction?

Yes. Like a log it is axis-based, so placement orients the ivory bands vertically or horizontally.
