Description

Apples drop from oak and dark oak leaf blocks when the leaves decay or are broken, with each leaf block having a small chance to yield one. They restore two hunger points and provide a small saturation bonus when eaten. Apples are also found in bonus chests, village chests, and dungeon loot. Surrounding one apple with eight gold ingots on a crafting table produces a golden apple, a powerful healing item. They can be added to a composter to raise the compost level. Apples are a practical early food source before farms are established, requiring no crafting or smelting.

How to get an Apple in Minecraft

  1. 1

Find oak or dark oak trees

Apples only come from oak and dark oak leaves. Birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, mangrove and cherry leaves never drop an apple, so locate an oak or dark oak forest first.

  2. 2

    Break the leaf blocks

Break oak or dark oak leaves by hand or with any tool. Each leaf block has a 0.5% (1 in 200) chance to drop one apple. Chopping the trunk and letting the leaves decay naturally drops apples the same way.

  3. 3

Use a Fortune tool for more apples

Breaking leaves with a Fortune-enchanted tool slightly raises the apple drop chance, up to about 0.7% with Fortune III, so a large oak canopy yields several apples.

  4. 4

    Check generated chests

Apples also spawn as loot in bonus chests, village chests, stronghold storage and other generated structures, giving early food without cutting trees.

  5. 5

    Craft a golden apple

Place one apple in the center of a crafting table and surround it with 8 gold ingots to craft a golden apple, a strong healing food granting Regeneration and Absorption.

Important

Only oak and dark oak leaves drop apples. There is no sapling or seed that grows an apple directly, so harvesting leaves is the only renewable way to farm them in survival.
